Professionals Concerned About Insider Network Attacks
SAN JOSE, Calif. -- Sixty-nine percent of 110 senior executives at Fortune 1000 companies say they are very concerned about insider network attacks or data theft. Twenty five percent say they are so concerned they can’t sleep at night. These numbers may seem surprising, but according to the FBI, 69% of damaging network attacks can be attributed to unrestricted employee access to sensitive information.

“Many IT organizations have their budgets focused on preventing the very real problem of external threats, but the necessary safeguards that protect the network from external attack do nothing to prevent insider network breaches," noted Terry Brown, CEO of Caymas Systems, a network security technology firm.

Brown points out data from a May 2005 Carnegie Mellon study of insider damage to critical corporate infrastructure, which shows that 62% of incidents were planned in advance, 39% used sophisticated attack tools, and most incidents were carried out via remote access.

“It’s no wonder that IT professionals are losing sleep over these attacks since firewalls and VPNs do nothing to prevent internal threats," Brown said.
